Cold Flow Property Modification

The most common challenge faced by biodiesel producers is matching the performance of blends with the various cold flow specifications set for winter conditions. While process improvements and feedstock control can help, achieving the necessary cold flow conformance inevitably requires some additive use. Unfortunately, the variations in biodiesel quality and composition, the composition of the mineral oil component and even the combination of cloud, pour, CFPP and FBT called for in each specification are such that no calculated approach to date has yielded any success. The only way to match the additive package to the batch specification is empirical testing. It may be that as the packages themselves are refined and improved some pre-selection will become possible, but for now the task is one of hand blending and testing to obtain the best match. SGS Cargo Treatment Services laboratories around the world have experience with this task and can assist producers, traders and distributors with this critical task.

SGS Cargo Treatment Services see the challenge as threefold:

  • Matching the most effective package to the batch characteristics at the minimum dose consistent with performance criteria
  • Making the matching process as efficient, rapid and cost efficient as possible
  • Minimising the number of additive packages needed to be held on site to manage a variety of batch characteristics in order to avoid dead stock and hence dead money for the client

BENEFITS FOR YOU:

  • You extract the full value from your overall process
  • Reduced delays and reworking of products and blends
  • Product quality consistency and hence partner confidence and market acceptance of your product
